Desserts manufacturer Bakkavor is to create 127 new jobs at its Highbridge site as it gears up for the busy Christmas period.

The permanent roles will cover a number of different disciplines, including production operatives, hygiene operatives, forklift truck operatives and dispatch operatives.

A spokesman for the company said these new jobs demonstrated Bakkavor’s commitment to the local area and economy during a critical time, “particularly with the Highbridge and Burnham area being affected by a fall in tourism over the summer months and with national unemployment reaching its highest level in three years”.

“The work will support the continued drive by the Highbridge business to make over 30m desserts every year,” the spokesman continued.

Coronavirus pressures

Recruitment at the Highbridge site followed Bakkavor’s 202 half-year results, which saw the manufacturer take a hit to sales and profits as a result of coronavirus pressures and Brexit uncertainty.

Shona Taylor, business director at Bakkavor Desserts, added: “Since the outbreak of COVID-19, we have adapted to unprecedented times and helped to maintain essential food supply at a critical time for the country and the economy.

“As we gear up for a busy Christmas period, we are delighted to be creating significant employment opportunities at a very challenging time for the local economy – and for people that have lost jobs in our community this year, we hope our new recruitment drive can help people to rebuild their lives and their careers before Christmas.”

Recruitment in the UK

Food manufacturers from across the UK have launched recruitment drives this year, as they continue to meet increased demand brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, Wales's largest meat processor Kepak has signed up to the Welsh government’s Apprenticeship Programme to boost workforce skills, aiming to bring 100 existing staff on board the scheme within a year.

October also saw meat processor ABP is to create 200 new entry level roles across its UK manufacturing base in a bid to combat youth unemployment.

Meanwhile, Derby-based doughnut maker Project D is set to create 100 new jobs as part of its move to a new production facility in the city.
