McCain Foods appoints new head of agriculture

Young will take overall responsibility as the frozen potato producer’s raw materials – ensuring reliable supply of high-quality seed, managing the whole potato purchasing process and ensuring best practice in crop husbandry.

Commenting on his appointment, Young said: “My focus will be to continue deepening the work to help protect the future of potato growing and embed sustainable agriculture practices. ​

Innovation and collaboration ​

“I look forward to working with the business to innovate, collaborate with growers, and ultimately deliver excellent products to customers.”​

Young was most recently agriculture and vegetable sourcing director for frozen food manufacturer Nomad Foods, parent company of Birds Eye, Goodfellas and Aunt Bessie’s – a role he held since January 2016.

During his 21 year history with the brand, he held a number of senior roles, including head of agriculture and vegetable procurement and agriculture manager for the business’s Hull operations.

Howard Snape, Nomad Foods regional director, said Young’s appointment played into the business’s sustainability plans in the face of continued challenges created by COVID-19.

Sustainability goals​

Young takes on the role as the business prepares to celebrate its 54^th​ anniversary, after the first plant outside of Canada was built in Scarborough in 1968. 

He will be taking over from Daniel Metheringham following his promotion to VP of Agriculture, North America Potato, based at McCain’s Chicago HQ. 

Meanwhile, last month, Food Innovation Solutions (FIS) has appointed Danny Butt to lead its team of development chefs,​​ product developers and innovation consultants from its London development facility.
