Salmonella sparks food recalls
This month has seen a number of products pulled from store shelves due to contamination by the bacteria, covered in this round-up of food and drink product recalls.
Abbott infant formula powders
Abbott has taken the precautionary step of recalling various batches of Elecare Similac and Alimentum Similac infant formula powders because they might contain Salmonella. Both products are foods used for special medical purposes for infants and ordinarily only used under medical supervision.
The recall applied to 400g packs of the product with best before dates ranging from 1 October 2022 to 1 May 2023.
Consumers that might have purchased or have been prescribed any of the affected product batches were advised to not feed them to their baby and return them to the place of purchase. People were also advised to contact Abbott directly for more information.
Freshers Foods Ltd pork snack products
Various pork snack products produced by Fresher Foods ltd have been pulled from sale, after salmonella was found in some of the products.
The FSA reported 34 different SKUs that have been recalled, including Snaffling Pig Pork Scratchings Perfectly Salted, Snaffling Pig Porky Puffs Low & Slow BBQ and Snaffling Pig Pork Crackling Marvellous Maple.
Best before dates for the affected products ranged from 25 June 2022 to 23 July 2022. Products were packed in either glass jars or foil packets.
Consumers who might have bought the products were advised not to eat them and instead return them to the store they were bought from for a full refund. Freshers Foods Ltd has issued point of sale notices to be displayed in retail stories selling the products.
Dogs Choice UK frozen dog food
Frozen raw dog food produced by Dogs Choice UK has been recalled this month, after salmonella was found in the products.
The recall applied to 500g packs of Frozen Chicken and Beef, Frozen Chicken and Beef Ready Meal and Frozen Chicken Liver with the batch code 0802222+2 and the best before date of 8 August 2022.
Unlike with humans, animals infected with Salmonella may not necessarily display signs of illness, but symptoms can include diarrhea.
Consumers were once again advised to return the affected products to there whey were bought from, but extra attention was placed on washing utensils and feeding bowls thoroughly after serving raw pet food.
Contamination and mislabeling
The FSA also issued a number of alerts regarding products recalled for containing foreign contaminants and labeling errors.
IKEA UK recalled its frozen IKEA Huvudroll Vegetable Balls because some packs were found to contain pieces of plastic. The recall affected 1,000g packs of Vegetable Balls with the best before date of 26 October 2022.
Meanwhile, Quorn Food has recalled three variants of its Quorn Bites products (Sweet Chilli, Korma, and Garlic & Herb) because they contained mustard and milk which are not mentioned on the label.
