Pigs in blankets are the number one nostalgic Christmas food, beating out other holiday classics such as Quality Street and mince pies in a survey of British consumers.

A survey of 2,000 British adults by boutique hotel The Maynard found the bacon wrapped sausages was their top festive food to remind them of their childhoods (53%), followed closely by Christmas pudding (51%) and homemade mince pies (48%).

According to The Maynard, almost all respondents (97%) said their most nostalgic Christmas foods were closely linked to memories of spending Christmas day with their families.

Unusual traditions

Outside of some of the more traditional foods, some more unusual treats and snacks made some Brits nostalgic. Cheesy brussels sprouts, dates stuffed with cream cheese, turkey curry and salmon sandwiches all got a mention.

The run up to Christmas 2024 has seen food and drink manufacturers launch a wide array of new products to tempt consumers this holiday season.

Meanwhile, the Great British public throws away an estimated 130 million sprouts and 91 million slices of turkey at Christmas,​ with more than two thirds of consumers admitting to cooking too much food over the festive period, according to research by Warburtons.

A study by the baker found that 93 million roast potatoes, 85 million helpings of stuffing, 82 million parsnips and 77 million pigs in blankets will be thrown away over the holidays – in addition to wasting enough gravy to fill an Olympic swimming pool.
