FSA opens precision bred organism framework consultation
The Genetic Technology (Precision Breeding) Act 2023 became law in England in March and provides for the development of a new regulatory framework for the pre-market authorisation of precision bred organisms for use in food and animal feed.
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is now seeking views on the proposal it has set out for his new framework which would affect England.
“Precision breeding continues to attract considerable interest. This consultation is an important opportunity for everyone, including consumers, civil society groups and industry to engage with us as we develop proposals for the new regulatory framework,” said Professor Susan Jebb, chair of the FSA.
She added that the Board recognises the potential for precision bred organisms to bring benefits to the food system and wishes to introduce a system that ensures safety and confidence.
The Act applies to England only, as will secondary legislation made under it. Due to the operation of the United Kingdom Internal Market Act 2020 and the Windsor Framework there will be implications for the other UK nations as set out in the consultation.
The FSA is therefore also welcoming feedback from interested parties across the UK.
The consultation is available on the FSA website, with a deadline for responses by 8 January 2024.
In other news, a complaint over alleged greenwashing from several drink water bottle organisations has been issued by the European Consumer Organisation and member organisations from 13 countries.
